Question Zimbra FOSS to Zimbra NE doubt

    Hi,

We are moving from a single server Zimbra FOSS (8.0.6) to a multi-server Zimbra NE installation (8.8.9).

    Orig: 1 MTA/Proxy + 1 Store/LDAP
    Dest: 2 MTA/Proxy + 3 Store + 2 LDAP + 1 zDocs

We have ~2000 users, 20 mail domains and 10TB of info.

Based on incremental migration guide , which we used succesfully in the past. The migration procedure will be:
    1) Backup to a disk (virtual disk)
    2) Present that disk to dest server
    3) Restore
    4) Repeat procedure until we can perform a last and short backup/restore operation.

This is the first time we are going to migrate (using Zextras Migration tool) to Zimbra NE using the NG toolset at the dest servers. So some questions come to our mind. Although, we will test this in lab enviroment, any kind help you could provide is more than welcome:
q1) Can we backup orig with Zextras Migration tool and then restore it in dest servers using the now embeded Zimbra NG backup tool?
q2) As we are moving from 1 store server to 3 store servers, could you give us some ideas on how to do this? Like for instance via script (or maybe filter on the webui interface?) saying which accounts to migrate in each server like a-h, i-p and q-z. If this was possible, we will try to find out how to split our users so we can distribute roughly the same space among the 3 new servers.
q3) Any other thing, tip or observation?

    Thank you very much!

PS: Some of the guides we are already checking out https://wiki.zextras.com/wiki/Zx_Bac...on_Tool_Import ; https://wiki.zextras.com/wiki/ZxBack...ZeXtras_Backup

Sure! Zextras Backup and Zimbra NG Backup are based on the same technology, and Zimbra NG Backup module can safely import Zextras Export.

Since you have 20 domains, the easiest way is to start the external restore using the domain parameter to split the 20 domains over the 3 servers.

q3) Any other thing, tip or observation?
If you have already followed this path, you already know that during the incremental migration any modification (deletion, moves, tags, flag) are not synchronized.

Test is the key, so test the new path twice, double check the new server configuration before starting the import.

Finally, for the Network Edition and NG Modules, please always refer to the Official Zimbra documentation, available here and the Zimbra forum

Have a nice day and happy migration!

Thank you very much for your answers Luca!

The problem with spliting the migration based on the domains, is that nearly 90% of our mail is contained in only 1 of them That's why I was wondering if maybe there is a way of doing it for all domains but based on starting letter of the account. Any ideas?

Thanks again for your answers and tips!

    Hi pup_seba!

Ok, in this case, another option is to manually select the accounts, through the Web Interface or using the CLI with the "accounts" directive, passing the list of the accounts to restore.

Just remember that the first pass of the restore will not be able to recreate all the shares: to achieve it, run the doFixShare on each server after the migration is completed.

Since the ExternalRestore generates the map file in the active Zextras Backup Path and it names it with the source serverId, please take care not to remove the mapFile or change the backup Path during the whole process, otherwise, the shares will not be recreated.

Also, if you want to stop and restart the ExternalRestore from scratch, remember to delete both the users ansd the mapfile, otherwise the next restore will skip previous restored items!

    Have a day!
