    General Migration Questions

    Hello,

I am planning a ~50GB Zimbra migration and have a few questions.

    Source Server
    Zimbra 6.0.8
    Debian 5
    Xeon E5504
    8GB RAM
    4 x 300GB 10K disks in RAID5

    Destination Server
    Zimbra 8.6.0
    Ubuntu 14.04 LTS
    Xeon E5-2620 V2 Six-Core
    16GB DDR3 RAM
    2 x 600GB 15K disks (RAID 1)
    LSI MegaRAID 9260-4i RAID Controller

I have installed the ZeXtras Migration Tool on the current (source) server.

    1. While exporting from the source server, can Zimbra still be used? I would like to do a test run of the import/export procedure before doing it for real.

    2. If Zimbra can be used while exporting, would you expect a performance impact?

    3. This is probably a difficult question to answer, but...do you have any benchmarks for export/import speed? It would be good to have a rough idea of how long exports/imports typically take and whether I can expect them to take hours or days!

    Thanks!

    Hello rty4,
    welcome to the forums!

I'll be more than glad to answer your questions:

1: Sure! Both the ZeXtras Migration Tool and ZeXtras Suite require Zimbra to be active in order to function, so you can run as many tests as you wish! You can even perform an "Incremental Migration" if it better suits your needs...

2: You might notice a slight increase in resource usage, make sure your JVM options are properly set up and your users won't even notice that ZeXtras Migration Tool is running... On the storage side, it's better not to run the export on the same storage device on which Zimbra's data reside to lower the impact on the system.

3: Unfortunately no, as Export and Restore times highly depend on your storage devices and their setup, on the kind of data and amount of items in your server and on a long list of other things... Your best bet is to try it yourself a couple of times

    Hello Cine,

One further question before I proceed: can the export be cancelled while in progress? And if so, how?

    Thanks.

    Hello rty4!

You can stop any backup operation by using the `zxsuite backup doStopOperation` CLI command: running it without arguments will display the command usage info, while adding the Operation ID of your restore will stop the restore. You can see the Operation ID both in the "Operation Started" notification and by running `zxsuite backup getAllOperations`.

All "zxsuite" commands must be executed as the "zimbra" user, and you can run `zxsuite help backup` to see the full list of available commands...

    Hello Cine,

I'm pleased to report that the test migration worked beautifully.

The 50GB Zimbra 6.0.8 installation exported to a 22GB format in 3 hours 7 minutes. I took your advice and exported to a separate storage device and no impact was noticed. Rsync was used to transfer it to the new server (running Zimbra 8.0.6) before the restore was kicked off. That took 5 hours 6 minutes. Everything is as I would expect on the new server - tags, shares, signatures and so on. ZeXtras Migration Tool really is a fantastic piece of software.

I am now planning to complete the migration for real and, given the time frames involved, should be able to fit it into one night. This means no users will be inconvenienced, which is great.

Thank you very much for your help!

    Hello Cine,

Sorry, one further question has just occurred to me!

When I perform the migration for real, I assume the existing data on the destination server (that was created by the test) will just be overwritten - I don't need to delete it beforehand?

    Thanks!

    Hello rty4!

Items which have already been imported on the destination server will simply be skipped during further imports, just remember not to edit/delete the mapfiles created by ZeXtras Backup in the destination server's backup path as those are vital to avoid item duplication.
