    Migration from 6 to 8

Can we migrate from Zimbra 6.0.13 OSE Centos 5.7 x64 to the latest Zimbra 8.0.0 OSE Centos 6.3 x64 using Zextras Migration Tool?

Is current versions of zxmig and zxbackup supports this?

    Hello anonymous0,
    welcome to the forums!

The answer to your question is YES! ZeXtras Migration Tool and ZeXtras Backup allow you to migrate from any Zimbra version to any other, provided that both are supported by the software (minimum Zimbra version: 6.0.7, so in your case you are good to go!).

Furthermore, the change in OS or Architechture does not affect the migration in anyway...

Feel free to ask any question you might have regarding your migration!

    Cine,

This is exactly what we are looking to do.

I don't have a lot of experience with Zimbra, so we were thinking of contracting this out. But, it seems that this may be a much easier solution, and we could redirect contractor $$$ toward ZeXtras, which would provide ongoing benefits.

Can you point me towards any documentation that would guide me through such a migration.

    Hello dlthomas!

No need to spend $$$ on your migration, as the ZeXtras Migration Tool is free and ZeXtras Suite comes with a fully featured 30-days trial that will allow you to easily complete your migration

All the ZeXtras technical docs can be found on the ZeXtras Wiki: the main ZeXtras Migration Tool guide can be found at ZeXtras Migration Tool Guide - ZeXtras Suite Wiki while the step-by-step guide on the Incremental Migration can be found at ZxBackup: Incremental migration with ZeXtras Backup - ZeXtras Suite Wiki

As usual, feel free to ask for any kind of information that might help you on your migration!

    Cine,

We ran the ZeXtras Migration Tool to create an export to a new Ubuntu server with Zimbra 8 installed (going from old Debian server with Zimbra 6.0.8). Took several days to export the data and run the import utility in ZeXtras Backup. Can we still get the incremental backup from our old mail server by re-running the Migration Tool or do I need to start all over again?

    Thanks.
    Dennis

    Hello Dennis!

It should be possible to "reprise" a standard migration as an incremental one, but it highly depends on how you performed the first migration.
Please answer to the following questions so that I'll be able to provide you step-by-step informations on how to continue:

    - What kind of storage contains the exported data in the source server (local or remote)?
    - What kind of storage contains the exported data in the destination server (local or remote)?
    - What's the export path in the source server?
    - What's the import path on the destination server?
    - How did you move the data between the servers?

    Cine,

    Thanks for the quick response.
Since we didn't have 2.5 times the space available on the source server, we mapped a drive to the new server and created the export there (this is all on our local LAN). When we created the export, we simply set the target to be /mnt/newserver/mail_export (all rights were correct as Zimbra and it worked correctly). On the NEW server we simply ran ZeXtras Backup (Restore) from that directory on its local drive (i.e. /mail_export/).

After the import, we switched to the new mail server and all was going well but when we realized we weren't certain if we could grab the diff backup from the old server for the 24 hours it took to run the migration, we stopped the new server and put everything back to the old server (total time servers were switched was about an hour during a weekend so not too many e-mails were missed). Right now we have been running back on the old server for about 2 days.

Should we just install ZeXtras Backup and start all over? We have about 50 domains and about 95GB of mail.

    Thanks for your help.

    Hello Dennis!

The setup you describe allows to continue your migration incrementally.
To do so, carefully follow this steps:

    - First of all, make sure that the files in the /opt/zimbra/backup/zextras/ directory on the destination server are never deleted (this directory contains the mapfiles needed by ZeXtras to perform the incremental migration).

    - Uninstall the ZeXtras Migration Tool from the source server
    - Install ZeXtras Suite on the source server - DO NOT INITIALIZE IT YET!
    - In the "ZxBackup" section of the ZeXtras Administration Zimlet, disable the Real Time Scanner and save.
    - Change the backup path to "/mnt/newserver/mail_export/". Once you save the new setting the "Backup is initialized" warning should disappear.
    - Proceed with the incremental migration by following the guide you find at ZxBackup: Incremental migration with ZeXtras Backup - ZeXtras Suite Wiki, starting from Step 3 (and since you are already set-up for the "data transfer" part, skip Step 4)

    Cine,

Thanks for the help. When I installed the ZeXtras Suite, I noticed the warning for the case insensitive file system (since we had mounted the new server via samba). I am afraid we might have missed some e-mails and don't know how this will impact the incremental restore.

As a result, we are now starting over with the new mail server and reinstalling the OS (to remove zimbra and all accounts) and will be using the Backup and Restore options in ZeXtras Suite. Hopefully the fourth time is the charm

    Thanks again for your help.

    Dennis
