Reliable backup is critical to production reliability; Zextras has been our preferred, commercial choice for that backup.

I understand v8.5-compatible Zextras v1.92+ is being debugged; 'beta' does not meet our production standards.
The magnitude of the changes between Zimbra 8.0.x and Zimbra 8.5.x is actually the main reason behind the longer time needed to provide a stable compatible ZeXtras Suite release. The amount of changes in Zimbra's core and services can easily surpass the changes happened between 7.x and 8.0.x, and thus a great lot of tweaking and testing is needed to make sure that ZeXtras Suite 1.10.0 will be stable and functional. The core changes in ZeXtras Suite (namely, the adoption of the ZAL component) adds up to this with more tweaking and testing - as our commitment to our customers is to provide the best product possible.

Out of personal curiosity, may I ask which are the "major production problems" solved in Zimbra 8.5.0p1 you mention which still affect the 8.0.x tree? I'm not criticizing your decision to upgrade, of course, but I usually only feel comfortable to do such major upgrades after .3 or .4 is released due to the number of issues usually introduced in earlier versions of "major updates" so I'm a bit curious...

It simply depends on a reliable timeframe for a reliable release.

When will a production-ready BACKUP capability (not *necessarily* all functions of Zextras suite) be available? If the answer is simply "When it's done", please clearly state that.

ZeXtras Suite 1.10.0 will be released in the second half of this month.

Zimbra 8.0.8 was released yesterday, and a compatible ZeXtras Suite release which also includes a lot of improvements and fixes to the stable tree has been
released some hours later. Now the Dev Team is again fully focused on 1.9.x and we plan for ZeXtras Suite 1.9.3 - scheduled for release between Oct. 6th and Oct. 10th - to be the final release in the 1.9.x tree.
ZeXtras Suite 1.10.0 will be a stable release compatible with all Zimbra versions to date and will implement the new ZeXtras Suite architecture on all of those.

a broad range of scalability and integration issues important to our business and to our clients', incl: support for openzal-based extensions, mariadb, spam system bugfixes, ssl/cipher-support fixes (nginx upgrade), etc

ZeXtras Suite 1.10.0 will be released in the second half of this month.
As a 'Full' or 'Beta' release at that planned date?

plan for ZeXtras Suite 1.9.3 - scheduled for release between Oct. 6th and Oct. 10th - to be the final release in the 1.9.x tree.
If that's a reliable projection, and will be a Full, aka *supported* and recommended for Production Use with Zimbra 8.5, then that's good to know.

    Thanks.

Thank you for sharing, I would just like to point out that the OpenZAL project is not related in any way to Zimbra and Zimbra 8.5.0: it's an open source project by ZeXtras compatible with any Zimbra release from 6.0.7 onwards.

IIUC, then, there will be NO Zimbra8.5-compatible, stable/production release of Zextras Backup until mid-to-end of October?

    WARNING

A critical bug affecting all 1.9.x releases has been found in the ZeXtras Powerstore module.

This bug can cause the loss of all items moved by the "doMoveBlobs" operation (a.k.a. "Apply HSM Policy"), so we suggest to disable the scheduling of such operation.

The cause has been found and fixed and a new BETA release, ZeXtras Suite 1.9.4, will be available soon. Together with the new release, instructions about how to recover any lost data will be provided.

More info will be available soon.

ZeXtras Suite 1.9.4 is being released right now.

To restore any data lost because of the ZeXtras Powerstore 1.9.x bug, run the following command for any secondary volume which was at some point set as "current" while running ZeXtras Suite 1.9.x
    Code:
    zxsuite backup doRestoreBlobs volume_ID

The "volume ID" can be found by running

    Code:
    zxsuite powerstore getAllVolumes

    Sample output:
    Code:
    zimbra@test:~$ zxsuite powerstore getAllVolumes

            primaries

                    id 1
